Starting School with Braces

Okay . . . we’re gonna’ say it.

School is starting!

If you’re one of the many headed back to school with a new set of braces or other orthodontic appliance, the transition can be a little tricky. Packing or choosing a brace-friendly lunch, finding a few minutes to brush after lunchtime and making sure the braces stay intact during activities may pose a challenge.

But, we have some tips to help ensure the year starts smoothly — for both patients and parents!

CALL THE DENTIST

Schedule your back-to-school dental visit today! A dental checkup every six months is great advice for everyone . . . especially if you are wearing braces. Even though all orthodontists are dentists, and those wearing braces are being seen more frequently by their orthodontist, it's very important for those in treatment to get a regular checkup from their general dentist.

LUNCHTIME

Choosing foods and treats that damage or break wires and brackets can be tempting at lunchtime — especially if mom and dad aren’t around to double check. Crunchy chips, chewy treats and hard foods are a definite "NO-NO." Check the weekly lunch menu, or pack a brace-friendly lunch to help avoid breakage. For those with retainers, make sure you pack a retainer case to help keep it from disappearing in a napkin or getting tossed in the trash.

GO WITH H20

If you can, carry a water bottle with you, or stop at the water fountain between classes. Drinking water throughout the day will help keep you hydrated, plus it will wash away the food particles, sugar, bacteria and acid that can harm your teeth. Also, remember — water is best! Try to avoid sodas, sports drinks or other sugary drinks, and be sure to rinse or brush afterwards if you drink them.

PREPARE A BRACE KIT

A brace kit in your backpack or locker is a must to make sure you have everything you need at hand. A brace kit should include: toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, wax, rubber bands and a retainer case. Need extra supplies? Ask our team at your next visit.

4 x 2 = ?‍

It's an easy math problem, with an easy answer to help keep your teeth healthy and clean. Be sure to brush 4 times each day (breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime) for 2 minutes to help keep your smile sparkling, your gums healthy and your orthodontist happy! If brushing your teeth during school is a challenge, swish vigorously with some water and brush as soon as you get home.

GRAB A MOUTH GUARD . . . OR 2!

If you're playing sports, or participating in physical activities, a properly fitted mouth guard is a must-have piece equipment. It will protect your braces, plus your teeth and jaw. Stop by our office or ask one of our team members at your next visit for a mouth guard specifically made for braces.
