Back to Class with Braces

If you’re going back to class with new braces or other orthodontic appliances, the transition can be a little tricky. Picking brace-friendly foods at lunch, trying to brush after and making sure the braces stay intact during activities may be a challenge.

?This school year, follow these tips to help ensure the year gets started smoothly —for both patients and parents!

?Call The Dentist

Visiting the dentist every six months is great advice for everyone... especially if you are wearing braces. Even though all orthodontists are dentists, and those wearing braces are being seen more frequently by their orthodontist, the need for dental visits should not be overlooked.

?Lunchtime

Choosing foods that can damage or break wires and brackets can be tempting at lunchtime... especially if mom and dad aren’t around. Crunchy chips, gooey treats and hard foods are a definite "No." Check the weekly lunch menu, or pack a lunch, to help make sure foods are brace friendly. For those with retainers, make sure you pack a retainer case to help keep it from disappearing in a napkin or getting tossed in the trash.??

Go With H20

?Carry a water bottle with you, or stop at the water fountain between classes if you can. Drinking water throughout the day will help keep you hydrated, plus it will wash away the food particles, sugar, bacteria and acid that can harm your teeth. Also, don’t forget — water is best! Try to avoid sodas, sports drinks or other sugary drinks, and be sure to rinse or brush if you drink them.

?Prepare a Brace Kit

?Keep a brace kit in your backpack or locker to make sure everything you need close at hand. A brace kit should include: toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, wax, rubber bands and a retainer case. Need extra supplies? Ask your orthodontist at your next visit.

It's an easy math problem, with an easy solution to help keep your teeth healthy and clean. Be sure to brush 4 times each day (breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime) for 2 minutes to help keep your smile sparkling, your gums healthy and your orthodontist happy! If brushing your teeth during school is a challenge, swish vigorously with some water and brush as soon as you get home.

??Grab a Mouth Guard... or Two!

?If you're playing sports, or participating in physical activities, a properly fitted mouth guard is a must-have piece equipment. It will protect your braces, plus your teeth and jaw. Ask your orthodontist for a mouth guard specifically made for braces.
